If you are acknowledging that it is a “popularity contest” then you are essentially disproving your other argument, that the show is fixed. What you are saying is that, regardless of ‘perceived talent’ of all of the contestants, the person with the most votes (AKA “Most Popular”) will win the show. It was pretty popular back when they called it Star Search and that show got far more actual STARS out of it than Idol ever has. This is how the entertainment industry actually operates. They are not letting America decide the next big star. Only a small handful of really big stars has come out of this show. They hand pick the talent they want to put up for the final pile, and you vote on the ones they picked to get that far. For the most part they all come into this with no career and LEAVE it without one too. I dont see how this hurts society. That is a big stretch. Don, how does American Idol hurt society?
