I find Zooey Deschanel to be captivating on screen. She could knit socks and still have my attention. As well, I have yet to be disappointed by Alan Cumming. He is quietly among my favourite actors. So when I heard that SciFi Channel is doing a miniseries of the Wizard of Oz staring these two, I was all a buzz. But then I heard it would be a modern reimagining, I actually thought this would be pretty cool.
Deschanel will play DG, a young woman plucked from her humdrum life and thrust into The Outer Zone (the O.Z.), a fantastical realm filled with wonder but oppressed by dark magic. She joins Alan Cumming, who plays Glitch, one of the colorful characters trapped in the O.Z.Tin Man is a psychedelic, often twisted and always outrageous take on the book. DG must discover her true identity, battle evil monkey-bats and fulfill her destiny. Her perilous journey begins on the fabled Old Road that leads to a wizard known as the Mystic Man. Along the way, she is joined by a strange trio: Glitch, an odd man missing half his brain; Raw, a quietly powerful wolverine-like creature longing for inner courage; and Cain, a heroic former policeman (known in the O.Z. as a Tin Man, for his tin badge), who is seeking vengeance for his scarred heart. Ultimately, DG’s destiny leads her to an emotional and terrifying showdown with the wicked sorceress Azkadellia, whose ties to DG are closer than anyone could imagine.
This is actually one reimagining that I think I would totally be able to get into.
I know many people are going to say that a classic shouldn’t be messed with, but if done right I see no reason why remakes cannot be done. Granted many of them are not good, but that is largely because they are not done right. In my opinion anyways.
Reimagining seems to be the IN thing right now, and so far its working. Battlestar Galactica got a face lift, DrWho as well, not to mention the reimagining next generation of trek movies and tv over the last two decades, were all successful.
So why not the Wizard of Oz… I mean O.Z.

I heard about this on Cinemablend awhile ago and was excited to hear Zooey was going to be in it. She, as you said, has a way of capivating you with her presence on screen. Her character in Failure to Launch was the best part of that movie and Elf/Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy wouldn’t have been the same without her. I’m excited to see this mini-series, a reimagining of the Wizard of Oz should be interesting to watch.
