Doctor Who Series 3 Episode 1 Smith & Jones
Last night saw the return of Tennant’s Doctor and his TARDIS to the CBC, which also co-produces the show. The first episode of the third series moves quickly, and has some nice moments as the Doctor meet’s up with Martha Jones, an aspiring med-student. There’s an alien on the loose and it’s up to the intergalactic police force (or thereabouts) a rhinoceros-headed people called the Judoon to find her/him/it. They quarantine the hospital they’ve traced the alien too, which is where Martha is working and where The Doctor is doing a little investigation of his own. But to prevent it’s escape, they move the entire hospital to the moon.
It’s there that Martha starts to show that she can hold her own with our good friend The Doctor.
Unfortunately they can’t turn to the Judoon for help, as they are looking for an alien presence, and the Doctor is decidedly alien… Two hearts (”and by the way count those”) and all.
So it’s up to the Doctor, using his nom de voyage John Smith and Martha Jones to search out the alien who is prowling the hospital and feasting on patients and doctors with her straw. I did say straw?
Couple stand out moments, The Doctor is of course delighted that this hospital does in fact have a shop, a reference to Series 2’s New Earth, and when he has to shake out his radiation which requires him to shed his converse high tops (and yes I totally own a pair of those for the very reason that he wears them - thanks to my Sweetie who indulges me geekdom) and proclaim that he’s “Barefoot on the moon!”
Next week, it’s The Shakespeare Code, do I need to tell you who that involves?
Doctor Who Series 3 airs on CBC Mondays @8:00
