This week’s episode was definitely a return to form, with a hint of underlying tension to keep us guessing the fate of Vincent Chase’s career.

Here’s the summary according to HBO.com

Drama plans a welcome-back party for Vince at his new condo, but his obsession with keeping the place pristine puts a damper on the festivities. Ari and Mrs. Ari learn that their son may not get into their daughter’s exclusive private school. Billy’s insecurities prevent Eric and Vince from seeing the first cut of Medellin.

Vinnie and E have just returned from a vacation in Italy with the promise that Billy Wilder is ready for them to screen Medellin. Ari is antsy for this movie to be released soon, because no one will hire Vince without seeing Medellin, something that Ari refers to as the “Gigli Effect”. When Vince and Eric get to the post-production facility where Billy’s finishing the film, Billy decides he needs more time. Eric puts the pressure on Billy, who goes ballistic once again and takes off with the film canister.

At the same time, Ari’s wife lets him know that their son may not be admitted to the same school that their daughter already attends. My fear that Ari could possibly roll over after his meeting with the school’s headmaster, played by Dan Castellaneta, were quickly squashed. When Ari’s informed that his son is not welcome, he swiftly pulls his daughter out of school. I thought it was a nice touch that Mrs. Ari has adopted some of her husband’s love for expletives.

According to Marvin, Vinnie’s flat broke. He’s about to be evicted from the hotel that he’s called home since his return, and the fate of his career depends on the release of Medellin.

While at the party at Drama’s new pad, Eric speaks with Billy and lets him know what exactly is at stake. Billy grudgingly agrees to let Eric and Vince see the film right away. Upon the departure of Vinnie and E, Drama shuts down the party, and Turtle relocates it to Vinnie’s hotel. The party is shut down when Anthony Michael Hall relieves himself over the balcony, and Vinnie gets kicked out of the hotel. Meanwhile, Vince and Eric have seen Medellin. Vince loves it, Eric doesn’t. The episode ends with a homeless Vince, and Medellin potentially being a flop.

Now the humor was definitely back this week, but I still felt that same sense of uncertainty that the first episode of the season had created. Even though we know ultimately Vince will win, I have this feeling that victory will not come easy this time around.
