Canadian Idol - The Girls - Top 11

The girls kick off their first performance in a startling string of crash and burn. As much as I would like to be wrong, or use this opportunity to upgrade my sound system, you know it’s bad when Sass gives negative comments, and tonight was probably the most she has ever had to give. With only two or three of the idol’s truly dazzling us with their ability to sing and entertain, the remainder left me wondering, what happened?

Maybe it was the scorching Toronto heat or first performance jitters, but Tara Oram took the stage first to give us a breathy but rushed country performance. Singing “I beg your pardon” She got the same answer four times over, O.K. but not great. Disappointingly enough only two other wanna be performances landed solidly in the O.K. range, the over the top technical singer and second up, Martha Joy and the boring fourth performance by Kamila (now knows as Mila) Miller.

An unusual treat to our variety talent hour was a concert worthy third performance from Montana Martin Iles. Compared to and outshining the talented performances of Jacob Hoggard (season 2) the only real question is the diversity going to be there as well. Regardless this is one girl who is there to stay, at least to the top ten.

Fourth up Maud Coussa-Jandl was a definite nose diver despite her spunk and personality and it didn’t get any better for the judges or the viewers.
Comments such as “pitchy” and “didn’t work” all added up to a string of poor performances by Annika Odegard, Naomi-Joy Blackhall, Christine Hanlon and Scarlett Burke.

Breaking the ear bleed streak was Khalila G singing an emotional “Family Portrait”. Her performance was an obvious relief to the judges, who praised her on living in the moment and fought over who could say it better. Carly Rae Jepsen closed out the show and has become our household favourite for girls. While getting slightly idolish at the end of her performance of “let your hair down” her sweetness and vulnerability are going to make her a serious contender.

After last nights performances by the guys I had higher hopes for the girls, but with so many bad performances and little fan base only those with a true town backing will pass on to the next elimination round.

  1. Rodney Said,

Carly-Rae is hands down my favourite so far.
