Big Love: Margene and Ben

So, they toyed with us for a few episodes. They’ve alluded that Margene and Ben might get together, especially in the promos. Even so far as having Ben discuss Margene’s ‘hotness’ with Jason. Well, we found out on Monday that it isn’t going to happen, that Margene has only mother-son love for Ben.

The reason I bring this up is to ask the question: Why would they bring this to such a screeching halt so soon?

It seemed that they would stretch it out longer; it seemed that they were setting it up to be a season long arc. I thought I’d like to see it go on longer, but afterMargene gave her speech (”..you’re
gross…”) I realized that I prefer it this way. I don’t think it would have been a good direction for the show to take. Now, in retrospect, I feel insulted that they were toying with the idea.

TheHenrickson family is just not like that. If ANYthing close would have happened, Margene would have been banished, and Ben would have been completely broken.

Now, that doesn’t mean that Ben won’t have feelings for Margene in the future, but a least we know Margene isn’t thinking that way.

Well, was it good that they nipped it now? Should they have let it go on longer? Or, should Margene go for it?

  1. Rodney Said,

Margene did the right thing. No matter how much she likes Ben or even if there is an inkling there, she knows her role.

I like that they nipped it. It was not a good story arc to be teasing us towards. Margene is turning out to be the most stable of the girls, despite her lack of experience or maturity. She doesn’t need this sort of thing attached to her character.

The only good that came from this is that we got to see Margene get pushed into the pool while suggestively horseplaying with Ben. And step out dripping wet.

  2. GODFATHER Said,

I also agree that this storyline would’ve been a disaster for the show. They can’t toy with the “incest” thing enough in TV shows, apparently. I’m glad they’re going in another direction.

  3. Seriesjunkie Said,

I agree ! I think Margene sees Ben more like a brother she can have fun with : it seems like she just needs to be a teenager sometimes because she’s still very young and already a mother of 2 and pregnant again ! As she was telling Sarah, she missed a lot ! But I think Ben does have feelings for her or at least he thinks she hot ! I think it would have been a good idea to keep playing with that a little bit longer without going to far ! But having them become an item would have been weird and totally wrong for the show !

  4. Jason George Said,

I think that the meaning of the Marg-Ben thing has been lost a little here in this post. I personally do not beleive the writers were every toying with an incest issue. I have always maintained that they were simply pointing out yet another oddity that Plural Marriages bring about. The same way they keep commenting on children at the compound being grandmothers, and sisterwives being their own daughters and stuff like that. I think they have always wanted us to know that the sisters wives love Bill (and each other) and haveing a son that is very easy to play around with cause he close to ones age, is just an everyday thing. I am glad Ben commented on her hotness, cause it showed his character is real, but it also shows, that in that culture, same age + Hotness does not egual attration.

    Your thoughts?

  5. Larry Said,

Yeah, maybe it wasn’t the writers/producers, but HBO. The promos this season have been very heavily trying to show that Margene and Ben were becoming more than they are. They employed that same quick-cut style that ABC used in the Lost promos to make you think someone died, etc.

As I said in the post, after the fact I am kind of insulted that I was lead to think that was where they were going…but after JASON’s comment, I more and more think it was HBO, not the Big Love producers.
