The Emmy awards are just around the corner, and Grey’s Anatomy received three nominations for its supporting female cast members: Katherine Heigl, Sandra Oh, and Chandra Wilson.

Variety explains each of the women’s chances as well as the other nominees

The ladies of “Grey’s Anatomy” dominate the supporting actress in a drama category, and it’d be far from a stretch to say at least two of those women — Katherine Heigl and Sandra Oh — rose to high dramatics last season.

Heigl’s Izzy Stevens began the year dealing with the death of husband-to-be Denny Duquette by baking muffins and ended it by having an affair with married man and best friend George O’Malley.

Oh endured a tumultuous seasonlong relationship and was left standing at the alter as Isiah Washington’s Dr. Burke said goodbye to her, seeing her trepidation at spending a life together.

Also on “Grey’s,” but in a much more subdued — though by no means less well-executed — role, was nominee Chandra Wilson, whose classy Dr. Bailey, try as she might, aims to lessen the hysteria that always seems to permeate the halls of Seattle Grace.

Personally, I think out of the Grey’s ladies Wilson and Oh have the greatest chance of winning an Emmy. Many people do not care as much for Heigl’s character and sometimes she is portrayed as spastic and many of her dramatic scenes feel contrived as well. But the Grey’s ladies have some stiff competition from other supporting actresses: Sopranos’ stars Lorraine Bracco and Aida Turturro and Rachel Griffiths from Brothers and Sisters.

The Sopranos seems to be the Emmy’s darling this year with the most nominations. That doesn’t mean that it would translate to wins, but since it had its last season, it feels like it would be awarded a lot of Emmys. Griffiths has a good track record and never won an Emmy for her amazing performance as Brenda on Six Feet Under. She could be winning here to make amends.

Who do you think will win a Supporting Actress Emmy?

I hope either Bracco or Turturro gets it, well preferably Bracco. Out of all the submission tapes, she sent in the best one.

    Nominees and submission:
Lorraine Bracco - The Blue Comet
Aida Turturro - Soprano Home Movies
    Rachel Griffiths - Bad News
Chandra Wilson - Oh, The Guilt
Katherine Heigl - Time After Time
sandra Oh - From a Whisper to a Scream

I actually think many people love Heigl’s character. Most people I know watch the show because of her.

Wilson is fantastic but has had very little to do all season by her own admission. Heigl carried the show - despite the fact some of the storylines she was given were not always the best. Sandra is just Oh-verated in my opinion - she had nothing noteworthy to report this year. In contrast Heigl’s performances were brilliant. If anyone else wins from Grey’s its a joke.

The other ladies nominated are excellent and if the winners is not from Grey’s it should be one of the ladies from the Soprano’s. Personally I am hoping it is Heigl.
