Doctor Who - The Sound of Drums
This Article Contains SPOILERS! You have been warned
The Doctor, Martha, and Captain Jack, with a little jiggery-pokery pursue The Master (in the guise of John Simm of Life On Mars fame) back to the 21st century where the power-mad, homicidal and sometimes very funny timelord has installed himself as Britain’s new PM, one John Saxon.
The episode moves along at a brisk clip, making up for all the set-up of the previous episode, and it’s cliffhanger leaves our heroes in a truly threatening situation. Saxon has made an alliance, of sorts, with an ‘alien’ race known as the Toclafane, who look like escapees from the cult-classic Phantasm, and is cementing his position in the UK, and then… The World!
Simm is awesome, and a wonderful counterpoint to Tennant, the story is great, and the idea that something of this nature has been planned for a couple of years by the show runners is just awesome. I came across a few interesting points about the idea of John Saxon on the David Tennant website which posted articles related to the show. Saxon’s name appears on posters in Torchwood (watch for them), the name is first mentioned on the front of a newspaper in the Series Two episode Love and Monsters, and of course the name and signage have shown through the entire Series Three, much like Bad Wolf did through Series One. And finally Mister Saxon, is an anagram for Master No. Six.
Next week, the Series finale, how will our heroes get out of this mess?
Cons watch: classic whites.
Doctor Who airs Mondays on CBC.
