The Doctor Who spin-off series final comes to the shores of North America with Cap’n Jack Harkness leading the charge.

He’s joined by Eve Myles as Gwen Cooper who appeared in Series One of the New Doctor Who opposite Doctor No. 9, as Gwyneth. Gwen is apparently a descendant, though obviously not of Gwyneth as her character was killed off, and as far as we know, had never had any progeny.

WPC Gwen Cooper is investigating a brutal murder when the crime scene is taken over by the mysterious Torchwood agency, and brings the victim back to life!

Driven by her curiosity, Gwen investigates tracking down the agency and it’s mysterious commander, one Captain Jack Harkness who has secrets of his own.

For a pilot episode, which is always important to consider when evaluating a new show, it pulls off what it wants to do rather well. It’s a darker show than Doctor Who and definitely aimed at the grown-ups, or at least the late teens, as language, and the occasional sex scene makes it’s appearance through the course of the series.

And then there’s Jack. He’s different here, he’s darker and less joyous than he is in the Who world. But still worth your time, and attention.
