No WiFi for Chuck’s Head

Chuck’s Co-Creator Chris Fedak makes it clear that Chuck’s secrets aren’t on auto-update in an interview with iF Magazine:

“It was real time the night before he received the email message. What happens next, as we get into the future, that information is just as a good as it was the night he received the email. It’s not real time. He doesn’t have a wi-fi connection. I think it works in the pilot, because it’s new information. Going forward, it’s an encyclopedia of secrets. Chuck now knows more information than he should ever know. He knows things about people, but now the information isn’t always up to date and that’s going to be part of the twists and turns.”

While it might seem like an obvious truth, it’s something that I was worried about watching the show. While Chuck should be able to make new connections with the old data (which is what the Intersect was supposed to be doing) he only has the information that he has. The show has popped up with a couple really outlandish devices so far (the organic-matter destroying cell-phone bomb is my least favorite) so I would have been saddened but not surprised if Chuck was magically getting new information.

The interview also talks about how the creators do have answers to most of the burning questions of the show, and they do have a plan. I’m actually intrigued by how often this is being said now. Back in the day, it was expected that nobody really had an overall plot arc or story plan in mind in American television. Then we had Babylon 5, and then show started to build their story-arcs and mythologies. Suddenly, if a show’s creators aren’t telling us that they have the season all planned out, we start to wonder if the show is really worth watching.

While I appreciate shows having respect for continuity, on the other hand I don’t think it’s the end of the world to play it by ear either.

Even if you don’t click the link for the interview though, I know most of you men will want to click for the picture of Yvonne Strahovski dressed as Slave Leia. That scene should appear in tonight’s episode (Monday, Oct. 29) Chuck vs. the Sandworm.
