Now that I’ve had a chance to view a little bit of the “press conference” format of the Golden Globes, I have to say I’m highly disappointed.
We all know that each awards show involves all kinds of politics and drama. But those things were kept easily to the Inside Edition after-show specials, or the news channels the next day. Blogs would be full of speculation about how terrible it is that so-and-so didn’t win and why, but for the most part the actual ceremony was about the person that won.
Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell’s commentary about the winners and nominees seems to be steeped in that gossip-y tone that I typically avoided. When Marion Cotillard won her category, they talked about her for a moment. Then Bush started saying how he expected Ellen Page, and they started discussing her instead.
This seems to completely take the moment away from Cotillard, and overall each category has been this way. I suppose this is because Bush and O’Dell don’t really have a lot of ad-libbing skills. But I would much rather see them celebrating the winners instead.
I hope this is all resolved before the Oscars. Though I must say I’m sure Jon Stewart would actually be much more interesting to listen to.
What did you think of the Golden Globes format?
