Smallville and Torchwood’s James Marsters was interviewed by TVGuide. Here is a funny quote in the interview that sums up James’ attitude pretty well:
TV Guide: Is that one of the reasons you like doing sci-fi — hard work and lots of sweating?
Marsters: One of the reasons. But you know, some of the writers from Buffy [the Vampire Slayer] are on the best shows around — Grey’s Anatomy, 24 — you name it. And they all have the same complaint: “This is great, but I just want to have a big demon come out of a rift hole and suck someone in to some interesting universe.” I’m, “You’re on 24, man. There’s nuclear war at any time!” And he’s, “Yeah, it’s boring. I’m stuck to reality!”
I really enjoy Marsters’ acting, and have always enjoyed seeing him in various genre shows. I wasn’t completely happy with his Braniac in Smallville, but that was because of how the character was written, not Marsters’ performance.
His recent debut in Torchwood was exceptional. We’ve always wanted to see more of Captain Jack’s pre-Who past, and the character of “Captain” John was a great way to introduce it. The shout out to Marsters’ famous character, Spike, a the outset of the episode was a nice touch. “Thirsty now.”
