While most late night television is suffering from the lack of writers, Jon Steward and Stephen Colbert are actually doing very well, says Media Life:
“Daily Show with Jon Stewart” so far this month is averaging 358,000 viewers in the 18-34 demographic, up 17 percent from the same time period in 2007. It’s up 9 percent among 18-49s, to 535,000 viewers.
“The Colbert Report” is up 21 percent in 18-34s, to 329,000, and 15 percent in 18-49s, to 507,000 viewers, compared to a year ago.
As the article states, a lot of this is because the shows focus on political news, and there is no shortage of that right now. They also don’t do many celebrity guests, so they aren’t having to fill their guest spots with increasingly strange “celebrities.”
But I think this also has a lot to do with Stewart and Colbert as performers. They seem to really be talented at improvisational comedy, and those are the skills they really need right now.
To be absolutely honest though, I only watch late night tv when I’m at my parent’s house (they’re fans of Leno). I catch The Daily Show and The Colbert Report whenever I can.
