Robert Picardo Commands Atlantis

As a follup to Sunday’s post, some news straight from SCI FI Channel. Former Voyager Doctor, Robert Picardo, will replace Samantha Carter as Commander of the Atlantis expedition in the 5th season of Stargate: Atlantis. This is just one of the announcements in a recent release from SCI FI Channel. GateWorld has:

Actor Robert Picardo will join the cast as Richard Woolsey assumes command of the Atlantis expedition. Says the press release: “The team, led by Lt. Colonel Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), Teyla (Rachel Luttrell), Ronon (Jason Momoa) and Dr. Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite), must adjust to his unique leadership style.”

This is a good thing as Col. Carter was way underused this season. Her character was too far off from her SG-1 character. Woolsey character has evolved over the years since his first appearance on SG-1, and fits Atlantis well.

Other notable characters in the announcement are: Carson Beckett returning from the dead, Daniel Jackson (SG-1) making a visit, and Dr. Keller elevated to full-time. The show is expected to premiere its 20-episode season this fall. It starts filming at the end of this month.

  1. Bryan Tait Said,

I’m not really up to speed on the happenings of Atlantis (I’m only just catching up on SG-1 right now), so I’m not sure what this may mean for the show. I’m just wondering if this means Amanda Tapping will not be returning in the fifth season? Will she still be a regular? Will she be relegated to recurring character? Will she disappear completely? Any info?

  2. Larry Said,

Based on the press release, she’ll only be in a few episodes.

She’s being freed up to star in Sanctuary.
