Many critics and fans alike have complained about Lost and it’s lack of “answers”. I’m in the minority where I don’t need “answers” to big mysteries every week. I watch Lost for the character development, I’m in it for the journey. But, there are those who need the “answers”, and for those people, this season ought to be enjoyable.
So far this season Lost has been providing many answers (sometimes at the expense of character) to keep rabid fans happy. Also, between the podcast and interviews, the show-runners have tried to be less ambiguous than previous seasons. One such interview was conducted by EW.com. From the interview:
DOC JENSEN: You’ve certainly picked some interesting names for your Freighter folk. How should we be interpreting them?
DAMON LINDELOF: With Miles Straum, we just thought it would be cool if his name sounded like ”maelstrom.” Charlotte Lewis was an obvious reference to C.S. Lewis and an important clue to places we’re going at the end of the season.
CARLTON CUSE: And an important clue to Charlotte’s own, as-yet-untold important backstory.
LINDELOF: One of our producers, Eddie Kitsis, has been pitching to us ”Frank Lapidus, Helicopter Pilot” for years. Daniel Faraday is an obvious shout-out to Michael Faraday, scientist and physicist.
CUSE: As is Minkowski, who’s on the Freighter. Those names are clues related to the space/time issues that will become more significant downstream.
As described, the producers want us to know that space/time and teleportation/timetravel are part of the Lost mythos. Instead of guessing, we can go on and enjoy the story without debating whether or not it is true.
There many other such explanations in the interview. Another controversial one is that the bracelets that Sayid seems to be fascinated with are not important, ”Sometimes, a bracelet is just a bracelet.” It is little things like this that can distract from a great story. It was an emotional moment that gets lost in unrelated speculation.
For me, the show isn’t about the island mysteries, but about the characters and the unbelievable situation they have been placed int. I really hope that the producers continue to dispel rumors that take away from the heart of the story. For me, it will only make it more enjoyable. What about you?
For some spoiler discussion (of tonights upcoming episode), highlight the inviso-text below.
Tonight, we learn that Kate has a son named Aaron in the flash forward. Of course there will be speculation that this baby is her baby from Sawyer (mainly because of her argument with Jack about the baby in the episode), but I believe it’s just what it seems, it is Clare’s baby. Jack is most likely upset with the circumstances that bring Kate to be his nephew’s new mom.
This is one of the ambiguities that I hope that the producers don’t waste time with, and just tell us which one it is.
