Pompeo could leave. There are several examples of loosing a lead, and the show continuing. Yes, it's difficult, but it happens.

"Valerie" became "The Hogan Family". "Good Morning, Miss Bliss" became "Saved by the Bell".

I disagree with Izzie as the heart of the show, female wise. from half of season 3 and all season 4 she has been unbearable. Winny and clinging, unlike old Izzie. Loosing her would be hard on the show, but it will make it without her.

The only time the show will not survive. is if Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) walks away. No lead, No show.

It's sad to loose Izzie, but grey's anatomy can definitely survive without izzie.

If Meredith leaves, the show will shut down. (lead character, show narrator, we see it all through her eyes)

If Mcdreamy leaves it will be a big blow, but it might survive.

any other character will have things change a lot around Seattle grace but the show won't suffer. new characters can be brought in with time.
