HBO Means Good Television

HBO must be one of the greatest channels to ever grace the air waves, look at this list… Deadwood, Carnivale, John From Cincinnati, The Sopranos, and some of the best mini-series that have aired since their heyday in the late 70s and 80s (I love my V!), to mention my two faves… Band Of Brothers (quite possibly the best mini-series ever bar none) and From The Earth To The Moon.
Well, they’ve done it again!
The third part of a seven part series aired this past Sunday on HBO. This new series brought to us by Tom Hank’s Playtone production company is John Adams based on the early years of the formation of the United States, and it’s 2nd President. Based on the book by David McCullough the epic series begins with the infamous Boston Massacre, and culminates with his death (sorry should that be a spoiler? I don’t think so, check your history books!).
The series boasts a fabulous cast with the versatile Paul Giamatti in the title role, Laura Linney as his wife Abigail, the always wonderful David Morse (this guy does’t work enough as far as I’m concerned) as George Washington, Canadian Sarah Polley, Tom Wilkinson, and Rufus Sewell amongst others.
Once again sparing no expense, HBO is telling a first rate tale, one based on character and story (and of course actual history).
HBO always seems to bring us the best when it comes to character pieces. Could you imagine if my fave write, Joss is Boss got a series on HBO!!! Take that fox!
If you have the ability you should definitely make sure you tune into this excellent program. I like historic pieces like this. As much as I love history I just never really connected things like the Boston Massacre to real life, but seeing it, it’s repercussions, it makes you see it in a new way. One that shows how things actually were for our neighbors to the south. And personally, tends to make me a little sad that they have fallen so far from their path.
But I won’t get political here. I’ll leave that to The Daily Show and The Colbert Report (ahhh news as comedy! I LOVE IT!!)

  1. Bailey2142 Said,

They also cancel good television. Deadwood was supposed to get a 2 movie wrap-up, but it seems pretty much dead as most the actors have moved on to other things. Even if they do announce it, it would probably be near impossible to work out now. Here is wishful thinking.

  2. Jon Said,

    Keep the politics to yourself.

  3. Bailey2142 Said,

Are you referring to me? I’m just stating that for all the good things and shows they do, they also do some “bad” things. Its not all raindrops and lollipops.

  4. Sandy Said,

Politics? B.S. If he wants to sing praises to HBO it’s only fair to also point out how they’ve screwed up. Before HBO even thought up the lie about the Deadwood movies, they abruptly cancelled the series before the final season, leaving us all hanging. They played dirty about it, too. Same tactics with Carnivale’. They yanked John from Cinci after one season, and although that pretty much stunk, it had it’s fans. What the heck was Lucky Louie?
Now we get more low-budget crap like Tell Me You Love Me.
HBO can’t be counted on for quality TV anymore, period. The only reason we’re seeing John Adams is because it was in the bag a long time ago, before they totally lost their mojo.

  5. Bailey2142 Said,

At least the 3rd season didn’t really end on a major cliffhanger, so we should be somewhat grateful. I agree about what is on today’s HBO. Nothing but boring stuff.

  6. Jon Said,

I was commenting on the blogger, the dig at the USA. America! F Yeah!

  7. Mac Said,

Frankly I took the remark of the blogger being sad they have fallen so far from their path to be directed at HBO, Not The U.S of America. Or maybe I’m just not so thin skinned.

  8. Jon Said,

“One that shows how things actually were for our neighbors to the south. And personally, tends to make me a little sad that they have fallen so far from their path.”

I dont see how that can be taken any other way. NO need to add personal insults either. I simply dont want to come here to read insults about my country.
