In a surprising move, creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar announce that they are leaving “Smallville” in an open letter. KryptonSite has the letter (excerpt below).
As the creators of “Smallville” we look back at 7 amazing years. We look back at 152 episodes. We look back knowing that the show will continue into Season 8 without us. After much heartache and debate we have decided it is time for us to move on.
…
Finally, to the fans who have stuck with us through the highs and the lows: know this – we never stopped fighting to make this show great. Thanks for watching.
Why leave now? The 8th season already looks like the final season, so why not stick around? I may be reading to much into the final quote, but from that it appears to be creatively motivated. Were they “fighting” with the network?
I still watch “Smallville” but I don’t really care for it. It started out so well, and then morphed into something I tolerate, not enjoy. Less to no Lex, less to no Lana, and not the showrunners leave.
Maybe this shakeup is what “Smallville” needs.

Comments
In my opinion, this is a great thing. They did a good job in the earlier seasons when they were kept in check by Greg Beeman and Steven DeKnight but after both left, the quality of the show dropped sharply.
Hopefully the producers in place now will let the writers use their imaginations. If that happens, season 8 has the potential to be the greatest season yet, even without Lex.
Good riddance to Gough and Millar, I say.
