Why Some Shows Shouldn’t Go to the Big Screen

With the Sex and City movie doing pretty well for itself, at least a couple months ago, there was talk of other series going to the big screen. Namely, Friends and Arrested Development..
Friends, apparently, was nothing more than talk. Arrested Development, on the other hand, is at a higher level of “talking.” Both of these shows have two things in common.
1. There has been somber talk of making these two sitcoms into movies for a few years now. Not neccessarily from the creaters, but more from the internet folks.
And…
2. Neither of them would really work as a movie.
X-Files makes sense. It has theatricality and cinematic stories can be conjured up for it. I can somewhat see Sex and the City, but then again, I will never see Sex and the City!
But Friends is a sitcom, and Arrested Development is sort of a sitcom. I never really got into Development, but from what I saw, it wasn’t anything that can translate well into theaters. I can see why people would want a Friends movie. It was a huge part of the 90’s. A lot of people loved that show, but sitcoms just don’t work as movies. They don’t. They probably never will.
A made-for-TV reunion movie would be one thing, but a big screen adventure? Not even Seinfeld, a sitcom that I actually loved, would work as a movie.
Honestly, what kind of story could be conjured up for these shows to fit a 90 minute timeframe? The thing about sitcoms are that the plots work well for the little 30 minute bubble they have.
Not every tv show that has a fanbase deserves a movie. People like Scrubs. Does that deserve a movie?
These shows were made for television for a reason.
