I fast became a fan of HBO and Showtime style series when I was first exposed to Dead Like Me. I instantly fell in love with the mix of personalities forced to work together in this wildly dark comedy. And it all revolves around the story of a girl who dies after a toilet seat re-enters the atmosphere and she becomes a "Reaper" Responsible for ushering souls into the afterlife and sparing them the horrors of their own untimely death.
Then it was canceled after only two seasons.
Half way down the page at the National Ledger:the demise of Showtime's "Dead Like Me" three years ago had everything to do with MGM planning a "Dead Like Me" direct-to-DVD movie -- which, it turns out, is due to begin production next week. Ellen Muth is back, along with Callum Blue, Jasmine Guy, Cynthia Stevenson and Britt McKillip -- but not Mandy Patinkin. In fact, the storyline for this movie launches when his character is replaced as the leader of the reapers (those who bring the souls of deceased folks to the other side) by a slick business type who doesn't care about helping the dead.
The very fact that they are replacing Mandy Patinkin has me a little skeptical about this update.
Patinkin, or Rube as we came to love him on the show is an old fashioned, dry wit, harsh reality foreman of the reaper crew. He was as much of a father figure as Georgia could ask for and a caring softy despite his gruff no nonsense sarcastic approach to leadership. He was easily my favourite character on the show, which is saying much if you ever saw how I reacted to Ellen Muth's character. I felt he really tied everyone together and made them get down to business no matter the odds.
He will be missed in this show. I will still anxiously await the release.

I heard great things about this show many moons ago, went out and rented the whole first season, watched it, then got sidetracked while waiting for season two to come onto DVD. Well, it was a good show, with solid nonchalant acting, but I haven't found myself making it a priority to watch the second season...Let alone even think about watching a movie.
That's the problem with long hiatus's. They lose the momentum and the rest of us are left looking elsewhere.
