Three episodes into the new Survivor clone reality show Pirate Master and what stands out. The players? Not really. The challenges? Definitely not. Pirate Court? Na. Not even the pirate theme stands out much to me.
If Pirate Master is going to differentiate itself from Survivor at all there is only one way it can and that is with the treasure. Think about it, what was the biggest angle in the last season of Survivor? It was Yau Man offering his truck to Dreamz for his potential immunity, Dreamz accepting, and then his not fulfilling his end of the bargain.
Pirate Master has treasures every week and money is always in play. CBS needs to do its part and put a focus on this aspect. Last week we caught a glimpse when Jay paid Sean $1,000 for his vote and Sean took the money but didn't vote Jay's way. But CBS only gave this angle about 1 minute of airtime and didn't make it suspenseful. Now, I'm not advocating that CBS mislead us with their editing but I am advocating making this show entertaining. I'm no TV-exec (in fact I'm about as low as you can possible get on the TV food chain) but add a little something to draw out the drama in this interaction. They didn't even show Sean struggling with this decision and they only briefly showed Jay's reaction.
Also, starting giving us some idea as to how much money everybody has received. When someone is talking and you put up their name throw up their total winnings too. The money that everyone has is another critical issue in saving this show that I'll get into more in the second part of my thoughts on how to use the treasure to better the show.
Bottom line is that CBS should build on this interesting dynamic and make it Pirate Master's niche. Pirate Master will probably never take Survivor's place but this could give it an audience. We'll see if CBS does any better this week and I'll drop the rest of my thought after Thursday's episode.
Check out the new episode on Thursday!
