Martha and the Doctor return to earth and end up tagging along with sister Tish and the rest of the Jones family to the unveiling of a new medical advance the age-defying Genetic Manipulation Device.
And before you can say sonic screwdriver things begin to go awry as the genetic manipulation goes too far and turns Dr. Lazarus into a monster! Can the Doctor and Martha stop him in time? Who's actually behind the experiment? Who is John Saxon? Who are these people warning Martha's family about the Doctor?
This was fun. And honestly just what I needed after the Dalek two-parter, this one felt like more of a romp, though in retrospect there are all kinds of details to watch for that pay off at the end of the season. I love the subtle hints of darker things going on that we're not quite sure of yet.
Both stars get to look fabulous in this episode, Freema in evening wear, and the Doctor all dudded up in a tux (with requisite cons of course).
This is writer Stephen Greenhorn's first Who ep and director Richard Clark's 2nd (he also did Gridlock as well as two eps of series 2 of Life On Mars) and both handle it well, keeping the pacing and the Doctor moving. The effects continue to dazzle, always keeping in mind the budget, and Tennant is always a joy!
Next week, is The Doctor's 24 knock-off (or homage) called 42.
Doctor Who airs Monday on the CBC.
