John From Cincinnati is Cancelled

Category: News

I would occassionally get an email asking me "Why are you not covering John from Cincinnati?" and frankly that was the first time I had ever heard of the show. And I run a site about TV Shows. Then I thought I would look into this show and I get the news that a whole day after its finale had aired, HBO gave it the axe!

CNN reports:

For the few devoted fans of the show, which David Milch ("Deadwood") created with "surf noir" author Kem Nunn, the mysterious final line in the season finale -- John saying, "Mother of God, Cass-Kai" over a shot of Kai (Keala Kennelly) surfing -- will remain just that, a mystery
The show is not even given a chance to tie up its loose ends. An abrupt unforgiving end like that usually spells out bad news for the series.

Some people I know said it was good, but I guess they were in the minority.

Did any of you watch this?

This show was only alright. Potential was there to be great and the cast was really really solid. I haven't watched the last episode yet, now it's like 'why bother'.

I tried to watch the first three episodes of this series, and I have to say I was EXTREMELY disappointed in it. There was no real indication of what the f*ck the story was about, and I lost all interest. I feel ashamed I wasted three hours of my life, when I could've been doing something WAY more productive... Like, reading this site! ;) Just joshin' ya, boys and girls.

AHHHH! This really pisses me off. Anytime a real intelligent show air's it always gets cancelled after the first or second season with no closure. I don't understand personally how this show didn't dominate everything! It was amazing, so damn inthrawling and INTELLIGENT!! Now here we go again back to shows for dimwitted, say what, spaced out, I don't get it type people. Sheesh!

For those who "Didn't get it" it was a loosely based script about a Modern day ( Which Means now in todays society and world ) son of God. And it's apostles. Kind of like how teh Claire Daines Romeo and Julliet version was except with the bible, SORT OF....?!. It was Fucking Fantastic. Kind of like, What if Jesus was to return today in California type thing. But It wasn't Jesus nut a different maybe new son of an ultimate spiritual entity.
Too bad it went over most people's heads and that alot of people will miss out.

But Friday Night Lights and Prison Break and What Not To Wear will continue on to 10-11 seasons, PFFT!

I dont recall anything about this implying that he was the "son of God"

He had no mission or purpose, just that John had the ability to produce stuff in his pockets among other supernatural abilities.

If he was MEANT to be Jesus, they sure did a poor job of alluding to that. Which could have been part of its poor ratings.

BTW, Prison Break and Friday Night Lights receieve FAR better ratings than John did. Sadly, it appears "what not to wear" (different network entirely) did too.

Like I said it just went way over people's head's. Which you are probably right and IS probably a problem when it comes to ratings, entertainment business and capital. But John was metaphorically a figurehead son of the father of universal spiritual entity. If you have ON DEMAND or something along the same lines, if you get a chance try giving it a second chance and keep in mind the dialogue is strangely but brilliantly placed and the silence is pretty strategic as well and says alot more than the words said by scriptnote. The body language is just superb. It's a really intense and intelligent show It is not bad by any means whatsoever, I think the main problem it had is that it made most people feel dumb. (I admit there have been a few other shows that have done the same to myself and honestly it is apretty odd feeling to feel that a show or a certain material thing is smarter than yourself. Kind of like all these new cars, I hate them because they engineered and built to be or act smarter than I am hahaha.)

Whichever network all those other shows are on doesn't make a difference. Just the fact that the highest percentage of people choose to totally endulge in crap like that is a little frightening to me, But I am weird guy, so....

Just google the phrases "john fron Cincinnati jesus " or John From Cincinnati Symbolism " and you'll find out alot more about it.

Posted by: Honey White at September 3, 2007 21:14

Sorry I keep hitting enter and such so this is the last explainatory post, It's not supposed to be a direct account of the second coming of christ but it's definately highly symbolic of it. I think we are meant to figure it out and have our own views individualy of that spiritual thought. The symbolism is ever present in all the littlest and big things from the Parrots to the numbers used to the images and words on the credit card it's definately a show you need to pay alot of attention to the things going around the cast as opposed to waiting for the cast to bring everything to you as a viewer.

ok now I am done with the analogy hahaha. sorry for the annoying seperate posts.

but here are two written theories by reviewists.

Theory 1: John is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ

This is the most obvious theory. His name, John from Cincinnati, contains the “J.C.” initials that instantly draw viewers to this conclusion. Also, the show's recurring theme of resurrection (with John, Shaun and Zippy) strongly implies a connection to the Christ story. Also, he's always talking about his father (or Father), and when John talks about his father's many powers and his ability to create “big and huge,” it's hard not to think he's talking about God.

Much like Jesus Christ, John possesses the ability to unite people, to become a leader of men, trying to bring peace and harmony to a chaotic world. Christ died for our sins, and similarly, John attempts to absolve many people of their own crimes. He lets Vietnam Joe know what happened in the war is OK, he frees Cissy of the pain from molesting her son, he gets Barry to confront what happened to him in the motel, he lets Bill get closure with his dead wife, etc. As jimmy, one of BuddyTV's readers, pointed out, the numbers John repeats could refer to Hebrews 9:11-14, about “The Blood of Christ” and Jesus' sacrifices for our salvation.

The primary argument against this theory is that it's too obvious, and we expect David Milch to have more in store. Perhaps, but it's hard to ignore the obvious, as Occam's Razor would tell us.

Theory 3: John is Everything

As the name suggests, this theory is sort of all encompassing. I lean towards this notion, that John is a human representation of God, the Earth, mankind, and everything else in existence. According to Merriam-Webster, John's last name, Monad, means “an elementary individual substance which reflects the order of the world and from which material properties are derived.” This seems like a pretty good description of who he is. John Monad is the Big Bang, the thing from which everything else gets its energy.

Think about it: the magic pants he wears are just proof that he is everything, and that whatever he wants is suddenly there. He can channel Bill's dead wife and can repeat the Stinkweed owner's conversations, because John is everyone and everywhere. When he gets punched in the second episode, it's followed by the earthquake that breaks Shaun's neck. John is connected to the Earth.

This theory is probably the best because it incorporates the other possible theories. John isn't just Jesus or an alien, he is both and so much more. As he said in the final episode, his mother is his father, and his father's father is the same as his father, because it's all connected, it's all the same, it's all a part of him. Linc determined that John was “the end,” and that he was near, but John is also the beginning and the middle.

Or not. These are just three possible theories, though there is undoubtedly a whole lot more to figure out. How did the image from Cass' camera get onto Dwayne's computer? Alien technology? Jesus magic? John is the waves that sent the signal? I suppose it's unfair to have a theory that John is everything, because it can be used to answer any question. What's your theory? Together, maybe, we can figure this show out.

Posted by: Honey White at September 3, 2007 21:22

Consider this theory.

The show isn't about John being Jesus (or Jesus figure) at all, but people trying to make that conclusion might get frustrated with the show when their assumption is not justified.

Or maybe its none of the above. And that's why the show failed.

It might not have been anything. I wasn't that impressed by the show so I am less inclined to deconstruct its meaning.

Ok.

This show sucked my dude it is terrible and obviously HBO who makes millions in making tv shows and airing movies agrees with me. They show is too retarded and hard to believe and watch at times. I watched it once and thats all i needed to know that it shouldnt even be in the same sentence as Entourage, The Sopranoes, and The Wire.
