Chuck takes Second Place in Ratings

Category: Chuck

Chuck took second place in the ratings last night, tieing with How I Met Your Mother and losing to Dancing with the Stars according to MediaWeek:

"NBC took a hit in the Monday 8 p.m. hour, with the debut of dramedy Chuck at a second-place 6.4/10 in the overnights (versus a 9.4/15 for the first half of a two-hour edition of Deal or No Deal on the first Monday of the 2006-07 season). Demographically, though, there could be some momentum if Chuck skews young."
Some reports are saying that Chuck brought in over 9 million viewers, though solid numbers are of course still not available. The question is, what does this bode for the series?

On the one hand, they were the lead-in to Heroes, which should have helped them in the ratings. But they were in a fight against the premiere of the juggernaut Dancing With the Stars, and How I Met Your Mother has been getting a lot of positive attention lately. It would be a hard spot for any newcomer to be in.

I certainly hope people don't make any assumptions about the show based on this one night of ratings, since the pilot was available everywhere before the show actually aired. Next week's numbers I think will be more telling, because it will be a brand new episode.

I admit I wasn't really looking forward to this show, but I was pleasantly surprised. I watched the pilot earlier today, and I'd say it's one of the most well-designed pilots I've seen in several years, right up there with the first episodes of Alias and Lost. Everything just "clicked." Writing, acting, wit, action, stunt choreography, comic relief, comic timing, character development, etc. Everything was virtually perfect.

I can't help but wonder how and if the show can sustain itself for a full season or more, but the first episode was definitely impressive.

They could have messed up the sister character by making her critical and self-righteous because Ellie is much more successful than Chuck, but they made her a supportive and concerned sister which was the right way to go. Chuck's best friend Morgan is a great comic relief character. Turning the NSA agent into a fellow Buy More employee to watch after Chuck was a nice twist. And, the CIA handler is beautiful and empathetic. Great characters and casting.

I gotta disagree with everything Umberhaven just stated, and pretty much for the same reasons you're saying the show will be a hit, I think it the opposite.

In my opinion, the acting wasn't all that great. There were moments, mind you, that were fun and funny, but overall, the chemistry between Chuck and Ms. CIA didn't seem to flow, and the NSA/CIA angle didn't mesh. About the only two things that I agree with you, are Morgan's character is well done (nerdy funny guy) and the sister played as a caring character. Otherwise, I don't see this series lasting too long. I think it would make a great half hour comedy, but an hour is WAY too long for what little action/drama the show will need to succeed.
