Survivor Blues

Category: Survivor

Survivor got off to its usual start this past Thursday and it wasn't very exciting. I've mentioned this many times already on this blog but the first couple episodes of Survivor are always just average.

This is not a rip on the show at all; it's just a dynamic of the show. It takes a few weeks to get to know the contestants and to have someone to root for. Survivor builds and builds each week and culminates into the grand spectacle that is the Survivor Finale. Sitcoms, dramas, and most all non-reality shows depend on the first few weeks of a show to hook viewers back into the new season but Survivor doesn't.

Survivor tries to make up for this by adding new aspects to the show each year. A couple of seasons ago they began the season by putting the people into tribes based on their race. One season they added Exile Island. This season they are mainly promoting the China angle. No matter the season CBS is always trying to pitch a New and Improved Survivor to us but in the end it always reverts back to the classic formula by the end of the season.

What do you guys think about this? Do any of these New Season gimmicks standout to you? Personally, Exile Island was a very good addition. On the other hand, I'm glad it is gone now. I just wouldn't want it to get old. This was they can bring it back and it'll still seem kinda fresh. Peace.

The Survivor formula is still alive and well. Ratings will steadily rise throughout the season and while lower than the previous years, it will still garner CBS the ratings it needs to renew it for another year. It has become a safe bet for the network. Us "die hards" always start off skeptical but tolerant and we always tune in each week. The problem is that we truly won't know the potential of the show until midway through the season when the current cast produces it's breakout member. For all his annoyances, "Chicken" stood a real chance of being a fun person to watch, but now we'll never know. I see a lot of promise in this years lineup.

I agree that it takes a while to get to know the cast and for certain players to stick out, but this cast didn't make a great first impression in last week's premiere. There are already several annoying players.

I was also getting a little tired of Exile Island, but I do miss the racial diversity of the past two seasons. Hopefully there are some interesting twists and turns still to come, because so far, I don't have huge hopes for this season.
