I feel like time is running out for the CBS primetime soap CANE. Ratings are extremely low and dropping lower each week on a night where television viewship is way up. It’s not that the show is does not get ample promotion. CBS promotes the hell out of this show. It’s not that the show is not good. CANE ably produced a full rich hour each week that, if anything, has too much going on each week. The cast is one of the best on television…on any show.
So what is the problem?
CBS has a problem putting anything on Tuesdays at 10. This season is particularly bad with NBC airing Law & Order: SVU and ABC airing the dependable Boston Legal. As I said, Tuesday has become a high ratings night for all of the networks and by the time the 10 o’clock hour rolls around, viewers are not gonna invest themselves in a new ongoing drama.
Tube watchers at this hour want what is familiar to them. CBS bet that the presence of Jimmy Smits would be a strong enough draw and they were wrong. For all of his past success, Smits is old school now and cannot carry a show much less draw viewers to it.
This is too bad. CANE is a very good show, but there are a lot of very good new shows this season. Ironically, CANE may be saved by the impending Hollywood writers strike. CBS, probably against its better judgment, has ordered additional scripts be written now before the strike, not because they have faith in the show, but because they fear a lack of new programming if the strike lingers on. The strike could give viewers faced with reruns a chance to discover CANE and give it a second chance. But that is a poor way to save a show.
CANE airs Tuesdays at 10pm ET on CBS.

There seems to be more commercials on this show than anything else. I believe for every 6 minutes of the show there are 5-6 commercials...can anyone verify? It looks like only half of the one hour is the actual show.
