Moonlight Undead Again?

May 14th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

The final nail may not be in the Moonlight coffin yet.

In Nikki Finke’s Deadline Daily, potential news has surfaced that Moonlight could move to Sunday nights on the CW. An insider told Finke:

Media Rights Capital, which will be programming Sunday’s two hours on the CW “may elect to take Moonlight as one of those two hours.”

If Moonlight moves to the CW, it will become the most watched show on the network, even if it only retains 60 to 70 percent of its current viewers. Just to play the numbers game a bit, Moonlight currently has twice the viewers of the CW’s number one show, Gossip Girl.

*UPDATE: MRC has decided to pass on Moonlight, according to the latest on Nikki Finke’s Deadline Daily. There’s a very, very slim chance for it to make an appearance mid-season, but at this point, MRC is only looking for “fresh material”.

Stoltz Joins Caprica Cast

May 12th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

Hot off the wire - more Caprica casting news!

SciFi Wire announced the addition of Eric Stoltz as:

“Daniel Graystone, a wealthy computer engineer who, after an emotionally crippling family tragedy, uses his technological wizardry to forever change the future of Caprica.”

This news is beyond exciting for me! Stoltz has been one of my favourite actors since childhood, and he’s both a gifted and versatile actor, as displayed in both his film and television credits. He joins Esai Morales and Paula Malcomson in what’s shaping up to be a fantastic cast.

Big Changes for S4 of Weeds

May 11th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

Big changes are in store for Season Four of Weeds. Warning! If you haven’t seen Season Three as of yet, this will contain spoilers.

At the conclusion of Season Three, the community of Majestic/Agrestic had gone up in flames, and Nancy Botwin had formed an alliance with drug kingpin Guillermo. Where will everyone go now that their “little boxes” have burned to the ground? Ren Mar, a fictional town on the border of California and Mexico. A recent New York Post article gave some insight into the move:

“The fictional community where the characters all lived - Agrestic - was destroyed by fire at the end of Season 3. Now Nancy Botwin is living close to the Mexican border to expand her pot business.”

Not only has the location changed, some characters will not be returning, including Conrad (Romany Malco) and Heylia (Tonye Patano). All of the other regulars will be back, as well as a new face, Albert Brooks, as the father of Nancy’s late first husband, Judah. Do you think these changes will help or hurt Weeds? Season Four makes its debut June 16th on Showtime.

Caprica Casts Joseph Adama

May 7th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

First they announced Paula Malcomson as the female lead on BSG prequel Caprica, and now Joseph Adama (father of Galactica admiral William Adama, and grandfather of Lee “Apollo” Adama) has a face.

According to SciFi Wire, Joseph Adama will be played by Esai Morales. His characer will be a:

“deeply passionate man with a strong sense of justice — and someone you wouldn’t want as your enemy”

This isn’t Morales’ first foray into the sci-fi/fantasy genre. Most recently, Morales played the role of Major Edward Beck on Jericho, although I’ll forever remember him as Richie Valens’ brother Bob in La Bamba. I think he’s a fine choice for this role, and is definitely of comparable talent to Edward James Olmos. Are you pleased with the casting choices for Caprica so far?

Sarah Connor Chronicles Set To Return

April 21st, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

It’s official! The future holds a new season of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

Variety reports:

Fox has greenlit a second season of the franchise series, picking up 13 episodes for next season.

I enjoyed the first season, but tried not to get too attached in case it didn’t get renewed, like some of the other shows I’d invested time in earlier this TV season. As long as it keeps up the momentum that it started to build in its first season, this series has the potential to be a really solid sci-fi series. Not to mention I thought Summer Glau was pretty awesome as Cameron. Are you excited by the news that SCC will return for a second season?

Eick Brings Children of Men to TV

March 27th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

David Eick, writer/producer on Battlestar Galactica, and executive producer on the now defunct revival of Bionic Woman, has a new series in the works for SCI FI Channel - based on the P.D. James novel Children of Men.

Eick told SCI FI Wire that he’s got a pilot in the works based on the book that also inspired Alfonso Cuaron’s 2006 film. Eick says the series:

“will question how society defines responsibility, freedom and a sense of values when it doesn’t necessarily believe humans will survive as a species.”

Eick’s going to be one busy man. In addition to Children of Men, he’s finishing up the final season of BSG, and working on the new series Caprica. With Eick’s recent record, what are your feelings on Children of Men - The Series? Think it will be a success like BSG? Or will it follow in the steps of Bionic Woman?

BSG Hunk Joins Cast of Whedon’s Dollhouse

March 27th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

What could possibly be better than former Buffy castmembers on Joss Whedon’s new series, Dollhouse? Battlestar Galactica hunks being cast in key roles!

Breaking news from Michael Ausiello at TV Guide’s:

Whedon has tapped Galactica stud Tahmoh Penikett (aka Helo) to play Eliza Dushku’s “twisted romantic foil” in Dollhouse, a spokesperson for Twentieth Television confirms.

Penikett has portrayed one of BSG’s most beloved characters, the first to publicly be in a relationship with a Cylon, although he wasn’t supposed to appear in anything more than the pilot. He’s definitely been one of my favourites on BSG. Penikett, from Whitehorse in Canada’s Yukon Territory, is the son of a former Premiere of the Yukon. This is not the first time that Whedon has cast a Canadian cutie in a major role on one of his series - We all remember Edmonton, Alberta’s Nathan Fillion as Mal on Firefly. Let’s just hope Fox treats Dollhouse better than they treated Firefly. What do you think of this casting decision?

Buffy Alums to Join Whedon’s Dollhouse?

March 24th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

Could Eliza Dushku be joined by some of her former Buffy castmates in Joss Whedon’s new series, Dollhouse?.

Joss Whedon had this to say to TV Guide’s Michael Ausiello about the casting of eight supporting roles on Dollhouse:

“I just want to make sure I get the right people. And I don’t want to give the impression that it’s just me and my friends having a party. Some [Buffyverse alums] might work out fine. But I’m not going to just seek out people that I already know are great.

Apparently, Whedon has read some yet-to-be-named members of the Buffyverse for these supporting roles. Personally, I wouldn’t be opposed to Whedon casting some of these roles with BTVS alums. What are your thoughts? Any particular members of the Buffyverse that you’d like to see on Dollhouse? If I had to pick just one, my vote would be for James Marsters - with or without the British accent.

BSG Cast Makes Letterman Top 10

March 21st, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

With the final season of Battlestar Galactica looming on the horizon like a Cylon baseship, the cast of BSG made a recent appearance on Late Night With David Letterman.

Letterman’s Top Ten List for March 19th was titled the “Top Ten Reasons to Watch the New Season of Battlestar Galactica”. If you missed it, you can catch the video over at Youtube.

The cast members come on stage completely in character, poking fun at themselves, Letterman, US politics, the war in Iraq, and even Lost! What does this really mean for the beloved SciFi series? I think it’s an affirmation that it’s finally hit the main stream. People who don’t have the faintest clue what an FTL drive is have now been given a glimpse into the world of BSG. Will it be enough to spark their curiosity and garner new fans? I got a real chuckle out of it, and it’s a must-see for all BSG fans. Any particular reason stand out for you? I know that Reasons 5 and 6 really stand out, but I think my favourite was Reason 1. Talk about art reflecting life!

Conchords Nab Grammy

February 18th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

HBO’s surprise hit last season had to be The Flight of the Conchords, the series about the adventures of a Kiwi folk duo after moving to New York. The success of the show has already led to its renewal for a second season, and now they’re Grammy winners, too!

The Conchords, otherwise known as Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, were awarded with the “Best Comedy Album” Grammy for their debut EP, “The Distant Future”. McKenzie and Clement weren’t on hand to pick up their statue, as they were at home in Wellington, enjoying a Writers’ Strike holiday. But the usually media-shy duo did grant a post-Grammy interview to New Zealand’s TV3.

Season Two of FOTC is rumoured to be slated for a fall 2008 start, but in the meantime, they’re preparing their first full length CD for an April 22nd release. Will a CD be enough to tide over FOTC fans until the new season? I’m hoping there might be a TV special, or perhaps a North American tour.

Mira Sorvino Guests on House

February 2nd, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

Mira Sorvino is about to make a “House” call - guest starring as a psychiatrist on the hit Fox series.

The Oscar-winning actress became a fan of the show while pregnant with her first child. At the Golden Globes a couple of years back, she found herself at the same table as Hugh Laurie, and enthusiastically expressed her love of the show. She never thought it would lead to a guest spot. Canada.com reports:

Sorvino wasn’t looking to do a TV show. But not long after meeting Laurie, she got a call from House’s producers. They wanted her to do a guest appearance as a psychiatrist stranded at a research station in Antarctica who comes down with a mysterious ailment; Dr. House has to treat her long distance, via webcam.

The episode, “Frozen”, will air after the Superbowl on Fox in the US, and on Global TV in Canada later that evening. Will you be tuning into this new episode of House on Superbowl Sunday? I know I’ll be watching.

24 Star Rajskub Pregnant

February 2nd, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

Warning - if you haven’t seen Season 6 of 24 yet, this makes mention of a minor spoiler.

Mary Lynn Rajskub, better known as CTU’s resident brain Chloe O’Brien on 24, is about to take on a new title - mother.

Rajskub and her partner Matthew Rolph will welcome their first child at the end of the summer. Rajskub had this to share with E! Online:

With the strike going on, I had to keep busy! We are thrilled and couldn’t be more excited.

Life has certainly imitated art for Rajskub. If you happened to catch the Season 6 finale of 24, you’ll recall that Chloe announces she is pregnant. Depending on when the strike ends, and the production of Season 7 resumes, if Chloe is still pregnant, Rajskub might not need a prosthetic belly!

Is 8 Enough For Lost Viewers?

January 26th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

With the Season 4 premiere of Lost just around the corner, and no end in sight for the WGA strike, speculation has begun if the eight fully produced episodes will be enough to satisfy viewers.

The cast of Lost seems to think it’s a good move for ABC to air the completed episodes rather than none at all. Yunjin Kim, otherwise known as Sun, had this to say in an ABCNews.com article:

We’re all going to be disappointed that there are only eight instead of 16, but the eight episodes are amazing, and I think fans will be very satisfied … I feel like this season all the episodes are self-contained. The speed of the story is faster. Each episode contains a question and an answer, finally. So there’s a lot of satisfaction.

The article also goes on to mention that if the strike ends by mid-February, five or six more episodes could be ready to air by the end of May. I’m thrilled that ABC decided to air the completed episodes. How about you? Are you content with eight episodes rather than none at all? Or will this just be a tease?

BSG Cylons Make Sexy Sci-fi List

January 24th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

Science fiction has never been hotter. In case you weren’t aware of, or in doubt of the sex appeal factor in sci-fi, a list of the sexiest extraterrestrials has been released.

In an EWeekly.com list entitled “Sexy Aliens: 17 Heavenly Bodies from Sci-Fi”, the Cylon ladies of Battlestar Galactica made the cut. EW writer Mark Bernardin had this to say about Sharon, D’anna, and Caprica Six:

Cerebral villainy just doesn’t get any hotter than this robotic trio, who have been vexing humanity since their fellow Cylons wiped out mankind in an all-out war.

The list also includes Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, and classics like Jane Fonda’s Barbarella. If we widened the criteria slightly to include all non-human sci-fi & fantasy TV characters, who would top your list?

Sutherland Completes Jail Time

January 20th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

After serving 48 days in the Glendale City Jail for a DUI charge, including his birthday and Christmas, Kiefer Sutherland is going home on January 21st.

The LA Times spoke with Officer John Balian, who had this to say about Sutherland:

“He was very humble, never complained … he didn’t give us any problems at all.”

He was allowed to serve his sentence at the Glendale City Jail, rather than the overcrowded Los Angeles County Jail, on the condition that he would serve his full sentence - no time off for good behaviour, or early release due to overcrowding. This makes Sutherland one of the only stars to serve his entire sentence, unlike recent celeb inmates Michelle Rodriguez, Gary Collins and Paris Hilton. With the Writers’ Strike still in full swing, and the next season of 24 on hold indefinitely, we’ll just have to wait and see what’s next for Sutherland. Let’s hope it’s not more jail time.

Julie Benz: First Dexter, Now Rambo

January 19th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

Dexter star Julie Benz is no stranger to a little on-screen blood. From her vampire character Darla on Buffy The Vampire Slayer, to her current role as blood spatter analyst/serial killer Dexter’s girlfriend Rita on the acclaimed Showtime series, some might think she’s reached her blood quotient and screen time with bad boys. Not so. Next week, she adds a little “First Blood” to her repertoire, co-starring with Sylvester Stallone in Rambo.

Jam! Showbiz recently chatted with Benz, who had this to share about landing the role of Rita on Dexter:

“When I first auditioned for the part, they actually thought I looked too pulled-together to play Rita,” Benz recalled. “So they had me come in with no makeup on and frumpy clothes. That’s how I looked getting the part, so that’s what you see on-screen. You see the real me.”

Benz’s Rita may be on the dowdy side, but this hasn’t stopped her Hollywood peers from taking notice. Apparently, Stallone is a fan of Dexter, and that’s how Benz landed the role of Sarah in Rambo, which hits theatres next week. And that’s not the end of Benz and the bad boys for 2008; this fall, you’ll see her as Angela in the film Punisher: Warzone. Besides being the side kick to these butt-kicking boys, what other roles would you like to see Benz play?

Heroes Dolls Arrive January 9th

January 9th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

If Heroes withdrawal is getting to you, never fear, Heroes dolls are nearly here!

On January 9th, Mezco Toys releases its line of Heroes dolls. Which characters have been dolled up? Claire, Hiro, Sylar, Mohinder and not one, but two versions of Peter, one flying, one terrestrial.

Each doll comes with one of the infamous paintings by Isaac Mendez, and an accessory - Hiro comes complete with sword and messenger bag, for example. Now you can re-enact your favourite episodes, or create your very own stories to get you through the writers’ strike! Anybody planning to purchase one or more of these collectibles? Personally, I’d consider adorning my desk with a Sylar doll. It’d definitely be a conversation piece.

Galactica Season 3 On DVD March 25

January 8th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

The very long wait is nearly over. Season 3 of Battlestar Galactica will finally see its DVD release this spring.

TVShowsOnDVD.com first reported the news from Universal Studios Home Entertainment, and revealed these details:

The street date is March 25th, for the entire season of 20 episodes in a 6-DVD package. One of the episodes, “Unfinished Business”, will have an exclusive version on this DVD release, including 25 minutes of never-before-seen footage! That’s just part of 15 hours worth of bonus material, which includes Deleted Scenes, Podcasts and Behind-the-Scenes Featurettes.

Included in the bonus material will be the “Resistance” webisodes that aired online between Seasons 2 and 3, to the delight of many BSG fans. Season 4 is supposed to begin sometime in March, according to SciFi.com, possibly before Season 3 is released on DVD. I admit I’m a bit disappointed by this release date. As someone who really enjoys watching the previous season of my favourite shows on DVD in the weeks leading up to the start of a new season, this is one luxury I won’t likely have before Season 4 of BSG begins. Does anyone else wish Season 3 would be released sooner?

Heroes Stars An Item?

January 5th, 2008 by Melissa Girimonte

Could it be? Claire Bennet and Peter Petrelli’s real life alter egos Hayden Panettiere and Milo Ventimiglia are dating?

Rumours first started in the fall of 2007, and according to a recent People Magazine article, Panettiere and Ventimiglia are a couple:

Fall’s turn into winter cranked up the heat in one respect: the connection between Milo Ventimiglia and Hayden Panettiere. Having previously denied a relationship, the two Heroes stars are now considered an item.

Probably the most talked about aspects of this potential pairing are not being able to get past the on-screen niece/uncle relationship, and the 12 year age difference - Panettiere is 18, and Ventimiglia is 30. I have to admit, I started thinking of other co-stars who dated off-screen. It’s certainly not unheard of for love to blossom on set.  In recent history, Lost’s Evangeline Lilly and Dominic Monaghan come to mind. I’d like to know what everyone else thinks about this subject. Are these relationships doomed to fail, or do they have the potential to last? What other romances between TV co-stars can you think of, and did they stand the test of time?  My thoughts?  It’s probably easiest for actors to date a co-star.  With their hectic schedules, they don’t really get to meet anyone outside of the people they’re working with.  I just think most of these relationships don’t last once the actors are no longer working together, and their dating pool opens up.

Entourage SAG Nominations

December 20th, 2007 by Melissa Girimonte

The 2008 SAG nominees were announced today, and what do you know, Entourage received 2 nominations: Jeremy Piven for “Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series”, and the cast for “Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series”.

Here’s what E! Online had to say about Piven and his competition:

In the comedy series categories, Alec Baldwin (30 Rock) is up against the now-usual suspects: Steve Carell (The Office), Ricky Gervais (Extras), Jeremy Piven (Entourage) and Tony Shalhoub (Monk). Gervais and Piven were both in the winner’s circle at the Emmys.

Apparently, Piven had 64 acting roles prior to landing that of superagent Ari Gold on Entourage, for which he’s received a number of nominations and awards, from the Emmys to the Golden Globes. Last year, he lost the SAG award to Alec Baldwin. Do you think Piven stands a chance among this year’s SAG contenders? I think Season 4 of Entourage really showcased his talent, especially because his character finally showed some heart, instead of just the usual trademark Ari Gold guts.
